Win rate in trading
A 90% win rate can lose money and a 30% win rate can make it. Win rate only means something next to the size of the wins and losses — here is how to read it honestly.
- Breakeven at 2:1
- 34%
- winners twice the losers
- Breakeven at 1:1
- 50%
- Breakeven at 1:2
- 67%
- winners half the losers
Win rate in trading, explained.
Win rate is the percentage of trades that close at a profit: 60 winners out of 100 trades is a 60% win rate. It is the most intuitive statistic in trading — and, taken alone, one of the most misleading, because it says nothing about how big the wins and losses were.
Profitability is always the pairing of win rate with the risk-reward ratio. A strategy winning 40% of the time with winners twice the size of losers is solidly profitable; a strategy winning 90% of the time scalping tiny gains against occasional huge losses is a slow-motion account killer. The formula that joins them is expectancy: (win rate × average win) − (loss rate × average loss).
Win rate does carry real information about a strategy's personality. High-win-rate systems (mean reversion, scalping) deliver steady small gains and rare painful losses; low-win-rate systems (trend following, breakouts) grind through many small losses waiting for occasional large winners — mathematically sound but psychologically brutal. Knowing which type you can actually stick with matters as much as the statistics.
From idea to a running bot.
Reading a win rate honestly means immediately asking three follow-ups.
Ask what the wins and losses averaged
A win rate without the average win and average loss is meaningless. The same 55% can be excellent or ruinous depending on the sizes behind it.
Compute the breakeven line
The breakeven win rate is 1 ÷ (1 + reward-risk ratio). With winners twice the losers you only need 34%; with winners half the losers you need 67%. Check which side your strategy sits on.
Check the sample and the tails
A 70% win rate over 20 trades is luck-sized. And one uncapped loss can undo a hundred small wins — which is what stop-losses exist to prevent.
Built for the way you trade.
Win rate literacy protects you from the oldest sales pitch in trading.
Marketing skeptics
'95% winning trades' is the classic bait of dishonest signal sellers — technically true, financially meaningless. Anyone evaluating claims needs the expectancy lens.
Strategy personality matchers
Whether you can psychologically endure long losing streaks decides between high- and low-win-rate styles better than any statistic — a bot helps by executing either without emotion.
VolatiCloud backtesters
VolatiCloud backtests report win rate beside expectancy, profit factor, and drawdown, so the full picture arrives together rather than the flattering half.
- Share of trades closing at a profit
- Meaningless without average win vs average loss
- Breakeven win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + reward-risk ratio)
- High win rate ≠ profitable strategy
- Reported with expectancy in every VolatiCloud backtest
Frequently asked questions.
What is a good win rate for a trading bot?
There is no universal number — it depends on the reward-risk profile. Trend-following bots are often profitable at 30-40%; mean-reversion bots may need 60%+. The question is whether the win rate clears the breakeven line implied by the average win and loss.
Can a strategy with a 90% win rate lose money?
Yes, and it is common. If the 10% of losers are much larger than the 90% of winners — the profile of strategies that never cut losses — total losses exceed total gains. Expectancy and profit factor expose this instantly; win rate alone hides it.
Why do trend-following strategies have low win rates?
By design: they cut losers quickly and let winners run, so most trades end as small losses while the few that catch a real trend pay for everything. The result can be a robust edge with a win rate under 40% — sound math, hard psychology.
How should I read win rate in a backtest?
Together with expectancy, profit factor, average win/loss, trade count, and maximum drawdown. VolatiCloud's backtest report presents these side by side so a flattering win rate cannot masquerade as an edge.
